Ice Frosted Bison Herd in Winter Snow Yellowstone National Park – Tom Murphy photograph. The bison of Yellowstone National Park is the largest free-roaming herd to be found on public lands. These are descendants of the once millions that roamed the plains and were exterminated to a handful of surviving bison that found sanctuary in Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone herd numbers over 4,000 and can be found throughout the park especially during the summer in the Hayden and Lamar valley. Bison calves are born during April and May and within an hour, are on their feet ready for a life of survival. During the winter months, bison endure by congregating near the thermal areas of Yellowstone. This photo by Tom Murphy depicts the winter hardships of the noble bison.
